February Vacation Art Workshop: Weird and Wacky Worlds

Description: We’ll learn about the amazing technique of collage and the important role it played in art movements like Surrealism and Dada. Then we’ll peruse the pages of old magazines for fun imagery to use in the creation of silly and unexpected combinations that make one- of-a-kind works of art.

February Vacation Art Workshop:
Mini Munchies
Instructor: Erin Rice

Cost: $25 per child
Ages: 6-10
Description: Oreos? Cupcakes? Ice Cream? Donuts? Doritos? Fries? Whatever your favorite snack or treat may be we’ll be using polymer clay to make teeny-tiny versions of it. We’ll bake them in the oven then attach them to magnets to keep on the fridge or give as sweet (or salty) little gifts.
All materials will be provided.
February Vacation Art Workshop: Make Your Own Galaxyscape

Description: We’ll be working on two space-themed projects in this workshop: The first is a star-studded, colorful view of the cosmos using watercolor and splatter techniques. Second, we’ll be recreating our own solar system using a unique print-making technique to mimic the appearance of the planets.

Fall 2023 Workshops
Botanical Watercolor Workshop
Instructor: Erin Rice
Date: Saturday, November 18, 2023

Workshop Description: We’ll begin the morning with some exercises in watercolor technique and we’ll explore a brief, yet fascinating history of the art of botanical watercolor painting. We’ll then begin our specimen study with a flat wash and start to build volume and detail over the course of the several hours with careful layering and observation. This class is appropriate for complete beginners or those with some watercolor experience looking to hone their skills.
Materials to be provided: Watercolor pan set and palette, 11×14 hot press watercolor paper, pencils, sketch paper, rulers, water jars and paper towels.
About the instructor: Erin Rice has a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a graduate degree in art history. In addition to running the education programs here at the Ipswich Museum, she also teaches art history at nearby colleges and creates art in different media in her free time.

Landscape, Color & Abstraction

Workshop Description: Landscape, Color & Abstraction explores color, mark and abstraction through the lens of landscape painting. This workshop will briefly look at the traditional elements and principles of landscape painting, and use these tools to inform and create a compelling abstract work of art. This workshop is designed to provide the structure necessary to enter an abstract painting language with intention and ease, while still providing space for freedom and intuition. Landscape, Color & Abstraction is designed to help the artist better understand composition, value, color, and most importantly, how to become a looser and more expressive painter.
What to expect: The morning will be spent exploring a few sequential exercises and the afternoon will be an open studio format. Amanda will demonstrate all exercises before artists embark on their own work. Artists will leave the class with preparatory composition and value studies and 3-5 color study paintings.
Age and Level: Adult (18+) and beginner to intermediate painters

Instructor Bio: Amanda K. Hawkins is an award winning painter living and working in Beverly, MA. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Montserrat College of Art in 2014 and Masters in Fine Arts in Painting at Boston University in 2021. She is on the Board of Trustees at Rocky Neck Art Colony and shows her work in gallery shows across New England. Amanda teaches painting workshops across North America, including in British Columbia and Arizona, in addition to virtual workshops which have an international draw. Her work can be found in private art collections across the globe. Amanda maintains an active studio blog and shares her creative practice with over 25K people worldwide. If Amanda isn’t in the studio, she’s exploring New England and gaining inspiration for her next painting.

Digital Photography Workshop

Course Description: This 4-session workshop is based on two overriding premises: #1 good photographs, even great photographs, are made by the photographer, not the equipment; #2 The best camera is the one you have with you.
Whether your Camera is an iPhone/Smart Phone, a digital SLR or a digital point and shoot you need to understand the basic techniques involved in obtaining proper exposure and focus. Once we’re sure everyone understands those critical steps the fun begins as we explore all the techniques for identifying and including all the elements of composition that elevate a snapshot to a worthy photograph, and the importance of and tools for post-processing your images. A homework assignment due for the 2nd session will be a key part of the learning experience, and class participation is important. No matter what level of expertise you think you are at with your Camera, this workshop will make you better.
The Museum is following state and CDC guidelines regarding Covid-19 and will adapt accordingly as they change. Currently we ask that unvaccinated people wear a mask while indoors at the museum. With any questions about these measures, please contact Erin at educator@ipswichmuseum.org

Paint like a Famous Artist!

Course Description: In this class we will discover the artwork of famous artists and use them as our inspiration!
Students will use a variety of materials over the 6 week course, such as acrylic paint, watercolor, collage and more.
We will begin the class with a short book to illustrate the artists’ style and to set a theme and then each student will interpret that in his or her own unique way. For example, we might discuss Monet and the impressionist style. We would then do our own painting using the beautiful shapes and colors found in his work. The class will also cover basic art concepts such as color, composition, line and shape.
Mask Policy: Currently, visitors to the museum are asked to wear masks while inside regardless of vaccination status. We continue to update our mask policies as the situation and guidelines evolve. With any questions about these safety measures please contact Erin at educator@ipswichmuseum.org

Art of the Wild

Course Description: In this class we will explore the possibilities that nature has to offer and take advantage of the beautiful colors of Autumn. Inspired by environmental artists like Andy Goldsworthy, Robert Smithson, and Ana Mendieta, this class will take place mostly outdoors using the materials we gather in the woods, the meadow, and along the riverbed. When we can’t be outside, we’ll bring nature into the classroom and experiment with printmaking and collage.

Summer 2021 Classes and Workshops
Fairy Garden Workshop
Date: Wednesday July 28, 2021 9:30-11am
Ages: 6-10
Description: In this workshop we will build a fairy garden. Using primarily materials found in nature such as moss, sticks, shells and stones, the students will create a magical environment suitable for the tiny fairies! With modeling clay, the students will sculpt additional figures to add to the gardens. These gardens can be rearranged indefinitely and expanded upon when taken home as well.

Experimental Watercolor Workshop

Course Description:
Are you wanting to experiment with watercolor but hesitant to try? Have no fear! This is a workshop for adults new to painting, and also appropriate for the beginner to intermediate painter wanting to take their practice to a new level. 
During this workshop, you will learn secrets to success, and tips to get you on your way to enjoying this versatile and wonderful medium.
Lessons will cover the basics for the best composition and subject matter, how to choose appropriate paints, paper and brushes, and how to mix colors, glazes and washes for the result you want.
The class will be held outdoors under a tent, weather permitting.

Painting Abstraction with Acrylics

Course Description: Develop your visual language as you paint to reveal form, color, line and light. Utilizing painting exercises, visual references, and photos or sketches, you will abstract imagery of organisms, objects, or scenes, either real or imagined. Challenge your style or practice to re-think compositions and explore different ways of painting. Spontaneity, experimentation, and personal content are encouraged. Guidance and critiques are provided. All levels are welcome.
The course will be held partly outdoors (weather permitting), partly in the barn of the museum, and tent.
Students will need to bring their own supplies. The instructor will provide a list of materials prior to the start of the course.
Cost: $120 members / $150 non-members

Embroidery on Printed Fabric Workshop

Join Elise of Le Comptoir at the Ipswich Museum for an embroidery workshop celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage in the United States. Participants will have the opportunity to choose images from a selection of photo-printed fabric and embellish their images with different embroidery techniques. All skill levels of embroiderers welcome. Materials will be provided and are included in the registration price.

Plein Air Painting Workshop
Saturday & Sunday, October 5 and 6, 9:00- 1:00 pm.
Ages: 16 to Adult
This 2-day workshop in plein-air painting will be taught on location by Nicole Hupin-Otis. We will explore what goes into making a landscape painting, working directly from the subject. The workshop will include an overview of materials, canvas and palette preparation, planning a strong composition, seeing tone and hue, developing, and finally, completing the painting. This class is open to all levels although some experience- especially in drawing- is helpful. The tone of the workshop will be light-hearted and encouraging, so if you’ve always wanted to work in oils but did not know how to begin, come give it a try! If you’ve got some experience but wish for a new perspective, join us!

Digital Photography Workshop
Thursdays, October 24 & November 7 (2 sessions, no class on Halloween) 6:30 – 8:30 PM
Ages: adults
This 2-session workshop is based on two overriding premises. #1 Good photographs, even Great photographs, are made by the photographer, not the equipment. #2 The best Camera is the one you have with you.
Whether your Camera is an iPhone/Smart Phone, a digital SLR or a digital point and shoot you need to understand the basic techniques involved in obtaining proper exposure and focus. Once we’re sure everyone understands those critical steps the fun begins as we explore all the techniques for identifying and including all the Elements of Composition that elevate a snapshot to a worthy Photograph, and the importance of and tools for Post-Processing your images. A homework assignment due for the 2nd session will be a key part of the learning experience, and class participation is important. No matter what level of expertise you think you are at with your Camera, this workshop will make you better.
